QUALIFACATIONS
US born, 35 years of age, live in the US for 14 years.
JFK Youngest elected, Roosevelt youngest ever.

14 consecutive years prior to election.

 4 year terms.
Originally no limit on terms, until George Washington refused to seek a third term.
FDR broke this by precedent and won 4 straight terms in office,
22nd Amendment prohibits you from serving more than 2 terms or 10 years.

Pay determined by congress, cannot be changed during term.
May not receive any other pay for work.
Extras: Mansion, Air Forcr One, Personal Bodyguard, Camp David, Health Care, Armored car

President-Vice- SPeaker of the house- Pro/temp, Secretary of State.

If president gets put into a coma, Vice president temporarily takes over by getting the President to say in writing he's unfit for office, or by getting majority vote of the cabinet to write it.
VICE PRESIDENT
Known as president in waiting.
Balances the ticket by getting someone who appeals to people the President may not appeal to.
If vice dies, president appoints a new one with majority Congressional confirmation.

Electoral College
Depending on state votes, you get electoral votes.
The bigger the state, the more power it has.

First tie for Presidential Election.

Aaron Burr and Thomas Jefferson each got 73 votes.
The matter was sent to the house, who chose Thomas Jefferson after a few re-votes

Election of 1800 Led to the 12th Amendment, making a vice presidential election to prevent a tie.

National Convention.
Called every 4 years to officially nominate presidential candidates. Delegates based on electoral votes.
Differences in choices of delegates between republican and democratic parties.
3 uses : Introduce candidates, adopt platform, stir up popular support.
Decice each party uses to select it's nomination for president.
Began in early 1900's as a reaction to party bass dominated politics.
Party boss was when someone had enough power to control a certain party completely.
Two different types
Delegate selection primary, Peoples opinion
 Candidate Preference party.
Primary is frontloaded, New Hampshire is always the first primary.
Began as winner takes all, moved to proportional representation. 15% or more gets it.

Caucuses: Meetings of a political party which gather to select delegates to the national convention.
